i currently have a cable modem and a us robotics wireless router. The desktop pc is wired into the router, and the laptops are all getting internet via this router… now all laptops are running windows xp while the desktop is running vista… can this be done or would i need to get a wireless adapter for the desktop pc?

As long as your desktop has the main connection via cable through the modem, you should be fine.
The only downfall with having a large amount of computers on one network is your internet speed. It may get affected from the lack of necessary bandwith, especially if every computer is running at the same time.
You need not to use wirless adapter for desktop PC. Your network already stablished by US robotics wirless router.
Configure network now as properly.
